About the Diamond in the Rough Hike-a-thon

The Hike-A-Thon will provide an opportunity to enjoy the Black Diamond Trail, one of our community’s special resources for outdoor recreation. Participants will have the option of starting at Alan Treman Marine Park or at a mid-way point along the trail, ending at the Cayuga Nature Center. A celebration at the nature center after the hike will include refreshments and educational programming.

Hike 1 – 5.4 Miles

The full hike begins at Alan Treman Marine Park, where parking is available. Sign in at the tent. Distance from this point is 5.4 miles. Participants will proceed to" the rink" and cross Rt 89 at the Cass crosswalk and proceed north 1/10 mile on the shoulder of Rt 89 and then take a sharp left on the short spur leading to the Black Diamond Trail. Head NW on the trail. Map details a sharp right (East) on Houghton Rd then a left at the parking lot onto Cayuga Nature Center property. A short trail through the field leads to the CNC pavilion for sign out. Participants on this hike may begin at 10 am, and should start no later than 11 am. There will be an aid station/checkpoint tent where the trail intersects the Glenwood Heights Road. Water will be available as well as first aid, if needed.

Hike 2 – 2.1 Miles

Hike 2 will go off between 11 am and 12 noon. Participants will be transported from Treman Marine Park to Glenwood Heights Road where it intersects the Black Diamond Trail. Sign in will be at the Marine Park The distance between Glenwood Heights Rd and the Nature Center is 2.1 miles. At Houghton Rd. follow the directions outlined in hike 1. A map will be provided.

Hike 3 – Choose your Distance

Hike 3 begins and ends at the Nature Center Pavilion, where one will sign in and out. Starting times begin at 12 noon.  This is a "make your own hike" on the beautiful trails of the Nature Center. It is designed for those who wish to participate, but desire a less rigorous experience.

Festivities at the Cayuga Nature Center

Official festivities at Cayuga Nature Center begin at 1:30 pm with opening remarks from PRI's Director, Warren Allmon. There will be live music by Rick Manning and friends, and light refreshments will be served. Cayuga Nature Center staff will be available to demonstrate the many resources and missions of the Nature Center.

Bus Transportation

Transportation back to Treman Marine Park is available to all participants. The last bus departs the Nature Center at 3:00 pm.
