Fossil Finders logo

The Fossil Finders project engages 5th to 9th children in classrooms across the country in an authentic investigation of Devonian fossils.  Fossil Finders enables children to contribute their own data to an on-line database of an actual paleontological study and to learn about inquiry and the nature of science. It provides an authentic learning context that elementary and middle school students find engaging and promote scientific reasoning necessary for understanding biological evolution and geologic time. The project is a collaboration of the Cornell University Department of Education, led by PI Barbara Crawford, and the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca, New York. The project is developing innovative instructional resources and tools for children and their teachers, including an interactive website (www.FossilFinders.org) where students can identify fossils, add their own data to a database, and learn about how data is used by scientists to create explanations. The site includes resources for teachers that focus on content and aspects of the nature of science and teacher development.
