PRI’s founder, Gilbert Harris, was an authority on Cenozoic mollusks, especially of the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains. Many of his students, most notably Katherine Palmer, who succeeded Harris as Director of PRI, were also enormously productive researchers on Cenozoic mollusks. As a result, PRI’s collections contain not only most of the type specimens but also virtually the entire original study collections for the fundamental descriptive monographs for an entire paleo-province: the Paleocene and Eocene of the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains. These collections formed a nucleus around which has accumulated one of the world’s largest collections of Western Hemisphere Cenozoic mollusks. These collections have also served as the bases for other landmark studies of this region during this time interval. This historic strength has increased with the addition of several important Cenozoic collections since 1992.
